First thing: All credit cards must be cut up! If you are not willing to do this right now, it’s a sign that you need some serious help. It means that you still don’t understand the implications of having debt of this kind—and that you are still being disrespectful to yourself and to your money.
People are often afraid not to carry credit cards, and if you feel this way, carry one for emergencies by all means, but lower the credit available to you by calling the company and asking them to lower it—a simple phone call. Pick the amount of credit you would like to have in case of an emergency ($500 or $1,000), and ask them to set it there. Or carry an American Express card, the one they offer that must be paid off in full every month or they’ll be all over you like a cheap suit. You wouldn’t stock the kitchen with cookies if you were dieting, would you? Why keep credit around that you don’t need and don’t want to use, if the temptation might get you into trouble?
